Content and technical basics
Check access, indexing and useful content before chasing new tactics.
Before testing a new GEO tactic, check whether an important page can be reached and whether it answers its reader’s question. Technical access and useful content address different failure modes. Passing one does not compensate for failing the other. Start with a real URL so that the exercise produces a specific finding rather than a general score.
Check the page a visitor receives
Open the intended public page without signing in. Follow an ordinary internal link to it, read the main explanation and check whether essential details are present as text. A page title and an image of the answer are not equivalent to a readable explanation. Note broken navigation, unexpected login requirements or content available only after an interaction.
Then examine the controls for the relevant provider. For Google, review robots.txt, unexpected noindex directives, canonical signals and hosting restrictions. Google explains that robots.txt manages crawling; blocking a URL there does not reliably remove it from search results. The crawler must be able to access a page to see its noindex directive.
Verify Google-specific eligibility
Use Search Console for a property you control to investigate indexing and how Google sees the chosen URL. Its reports can help you identify access and indexing issues; they are not a universal monitor for other AI products. Google’s getting-started guide explains ownership verification, indexing reports and performance monitoring.
Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It also says eligibility does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving. Keep that limit beside the check. The relevant requirements are in Google’s AI features guidance.
Improve the answer itself
Hypothetical example: a beginner pottery class page omits whether firing is included. Add the actual inclusion, any extra charge, relevant limits and how the reader can confirm the arrangement. Do not invent a studio’s policy to fill the gap. A page becomes more useful by resolving the real uncertainty, not by adding generic paragraphs about pottery.
Check material claims against appropriate evidence and place the source nearby. Explain conditions that would change the answer. Give clear authorship or publishing responsibility without inventing qualifications. Google’s people-first guidance asks whether content offers original value, clear sourcing and a satisfying answer to its intended audience.
Maintain a coherent page
Use descriptive titles and headings, meaningful internal links and structured data that reflects visible content. For translated pages, provide complete translations and equivalent-page language links. Google’s localized-version documentation explains reciprocal language annotations. These annotations help describe versions; they do not translate an incomplete page.
Record the original problem, the change and the check that confirmed the change. An accessible page or a corrected field is a concrete result. A later citation, visit or booking is a separate observation requiring its own evidence. This keeps practical maintenance useful even when no measurable AI-search effect has been established.
